Windows 98 SE and I am trying to connect to a network Lexmark Z605m printer on a Windows XP machine. I have file and printer sharing on for both PCs and when I run the Add Printer wizard, it can find the printer and install it, but when I try to print, it cant communicate. I have also tried installing the drivers onto the 98 PC and then connecting to the network printer. Lexmark says it cant be done, but I had it working once, but I can’t remember how.

For all of my printers, all I had to do was plug them in and turn them on. CUPS then detected them and automatically did it itself. Otherwise if that does not work, you will have to add on under printers… although it should detect it, and if it does not have a driver, then it should use a generic one.

I have gotten a 1986 dot matrix printer to work perfectly with Ubuntu… so it has good drivers.

Sure! Your printer has detected that the cartridges were refills! Cartridges no have chips in them and once the chip is set to empty, refilling them is a waste of time because they wont work.

1. Try installing the drivers again, sometimes this works.

2. Which of the Lexmark printers is this (there may be manual removal instructions on Lexmark’s website).

3. Is the printer still attached to the PC? If so and it will not let you re-install the drivers. Try unplugging the printer. Removing the drivers in the device manager. Rebooting and now un-installing the drivers.

Question by holacarinados: Can a cheap Lexmark printer print photos this good? What’s the catch?
I should say a FREE lexmark printer. I got a refurbished Lexmark printer z515 for from a legit vendor that came with a rebate, so in effect I got the printer for free. It came with two ink cartridges - lexmark black 17 & lexmark color 27. I’ve printed out five 8×10′’s and the quality is amazing. I’ve matched it with prints from epson r1800 and 2400 - which go for 0-0. I can’t find any specs on the inks or the cartridges, but a pro photograper said the images will fade within about two years. Is that true or was he misinformed or jealous? Any other reason why my prints are inferior if I can’t detect a difference. I have 20/10 vision or vice versa whatever your vision is when you can see at 20 feet what most people see at 10 feet (but I’m not farsighted).

The catch is the price of the ink- each more then the price of the printer you got and also the fact that you will need to change that ink very very often,

Use Windows Explorer (or any other file manager you have), copy from “My Pictures” and paste to (USB drive x, where x is the letter assigned to your Lexmark USB card reader) while the card is in the reader.

You may have to drill down for the exact sub folder on the memory card, it’s usually three levels down from the top ( Semi fictitious example: On a Canon camera, Master folder (first level) is DCIM, Sub folder (second level) is 100ABCDE (First 3 characters are numbers 100 to 999 (directory number) and shall not be duplicated. Remaining 5 characters are free. May be different for each directory. Directory numbers need not be consecutive.) and the third level are files like ABCD0001.JPG (First 4 characters are free. Following 4-digit number is the file number. Standalone files are also DCF objects. First 4 characters (free) may be different in the same directory. )

The streaks are due to clogged jets on the cartridge.

To align the color cartridge, simply try taking the cartridge out, and putting it back ini. Most often on Lexmark printers, this will bring up a message asking if your cartridges are new or old and of what number they are. after this menu you will likely be forwarded to a printing alignment page. Follow the instructions there.

I’m trying to install a Lexmark printer right now and I’ve finished the installation process, but right now it’s saying “Please wait…..preparing your printer” and it’s been doing that for about an hour. Is that normal or should I try reinstalling it?

No, that’s not normal. It should only take a few minutes. Try closing or minimizing any open windows first to see if maybe there’s a button/dialog box that needs a button pressed or something that you’re not seeing that will allow the continuation of the install. Otherwise try restarting your computer first to see if it is all set and ready to go and just needed a jump start. If that all fails, then I’d say try reinstalling the printer again.

I have a Lexmark X1150 All-In-One printer. If I don’t use it all the time, the cartridges won’t work and there are lines through my text. How can I resolve this? Do I dump the printer and buy a new one or is there an easier way to fix the problem?

Put about an inch of hot (not boiling) water in a cup, let the cartridges sit in it for about 5 minutes. This will dissolve the ink that has dried up and partially clogged the print head (that shiny metal strip). Also using a little bleach on a paper towel to wipe the bottom of the print heads help. People recommend storing the cartridges in a zip lock bag if you’re not going to use the printer for awhile (going on vacation), but who really does this, well at least not me.

I print Word documents that are 20% text and 80% images. Check the Cable that connects your printer to the computer and then also verify that your computers ports (USB or Parrallel) ports are working. Test your printer on another computer to see if it is the printer or something wrong with your computer or cabels. If it is not a new printer get a new one, these days they cost only 40 $ or less

I tore apart an old lexmark printer and discovered this really nice and very simple stepper driven print head mechanism. Once all the plastic and crap is removed it makes a great linear stage with a large flat area to attach things to, and a pretty high torque driver to push them around. They just don’t make ‘em like this anymore.

It’s a specially odd Lexmark thingy. With all my Epson and HP installations, I simply installed the driver, bimbadaboom, done. Printer Set Up Utility is at:
Applications /Utilities.

You can also simply open a document that you want to print, go to File > Print, and you will see “No printer selected”. Click that and choose “Add Printer”.

Question by Smith: Lexmark printer?
Hi everyone,
I have Lexmark Optra S 1855 laser printer, I had lost it’s driver so I have downloaded online but now i face problem that when i give print to it, printer print some symbolic language. Can someone help me to overcome this problem. I had purchase this printer used so I have no original invoice of vendor so i can’t contact Lexmark customer service. Please help me.

i had the same problem but you can contact lexmark and they will not ask for proof of purchase or anything

I have a lexmark Z603 inkjet printer. the problem is that the printer prints a blank sheet though the catridges are filled and installed properly. Also the port is ok.
can any techie help me out?

How old is it? I had a Lexmark printer for 3 months and it did the exact same thing. Buy Epson or HP when it comes to printers, I think.

I have been to the Lexmark site and found myself in an endless loop that does not offer the download. I have also been to several other sites and they all seem to want me to buy a new printer or printer supplies.

I have a Lexmark printer and hp ink.The cartridge does not fit and is #56.

I have a Lexmark 8350 all in one and I just installed a new ink cartridge but it still says low ink. The cartridge I installed is a refilled one does that make a difference? It prints just fine, it just says low ink when it’s not.
